MPC Container Ships Takes Delivery Of Methanol Dual-Fuel Vessel NCL Vestland

Norwegian tonnage provider MPC Container Ships (MPCC) has successfully delivered NCL Vestland, the first of two methanol dual-fuel 1,279 TEU containerships. The vessel was built at Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering in China, representing a significant step towards sustainable shipping.

    • Deadweight Tonnage (DWT): 18,800
    • Capacity: 1,279 TEU
    • Green Fuel: Capable of burning green methanol, reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 95%.
  • Financial Background:
    • Ordered in 2022 for approximately $39 million per unit.
    • Supported by financial contributions from:
      • Enova: NOK 13.7 million ($1.21 million).
      • NOx Fund: NOK 60 million for emissions reduction.

Operational Role and Impact

  • Charter Agreement:
    • Embarks on a 15-year charter with North Sea Container Line (NCL), ensuring reliable operations along Norway’s coastline.
  • Sustainability Leadership:
    • Demonstrates MPCC’s commitment to low-emission shipping.
    • Advances the adoption of green methanol as an alternative fuel in maritime operations.

Future Deliveries

  • NCL Nordland, the sister vessel of NCL Vestland, is scheduled for delivery in February 2025.
  • MPCC owns 90.1% of the vessels through a partnership with Topeka MPC Maritime AS, a joint venture involving the Wilhelmsen Group and MPC Capital AG.

Context in Eco-Friendly Shipping

  • In July 2024, MPCC took delivery of its final 5,500 TEU methanol-ready boxship, named Colorado, from South Korea’s HJ Shipbuilding & Construction. The ship entered a seven-year charter with ZIM Integrated Shipping Services.

By adding NCL Vestland to its fleet, MPCC reinforces its position as a leader in sustainable shipping and continues to drive innovation in reducing maritime emissions.
