South Korea witnessed a substantial rebound in cruise tourism in 2024 as the industry capitalized on post-pandemic travel demand. According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the number of cruise tourists visiting South Korea almost tripled compared to the previous year.
Key Statistics
- Tourist Numbers: Approximately 810,000 visitors arrived on cruise ships in 2024, up from 273,000 in 2023.
- Cruise Arrivals: A total of 414 cruises docked at South Korean ports, doubling from 203 in 2023.
Despite this remarkable growth, the figures remain significantly lower than the 2016 peak of 1.95 million visitors.
Major Contributing Factors
- Rise in Chinese Tourists: Chinese visitors constituted 63% of the total, with 510,000 tourists in 2024 compared to just 50,000 in 2023.
- Post-Pandemic Demand: The revival of international travel played a pivotal role in driving growth.
Projections for 2025
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries estimates the number of cruise tourists will increase further to 1.09 million in 2025.
To sustain and accelerate growth, the government plans to:
- Develop tailored tour packages at ports of call.
- Implement measures to attract more cruise lines.
South Korea’s cruise tourism industry is experiencing a robust recovery, with significant growth expected in 2025. The government’s proactive efforts to enhance the cruise experience and promote tourism are likely to contribute to a continued upward trajectory, positioning the country as a favored cruise destination in the post-pandemic era.
