The Neoliner Origin, the world’s longest wind-powered cargo ship, was officially launched Friday at the Turkish port of Tuzla. This 136-meter (450-foot) vessel represents a major step toward reducing carbon emissions in maritime trade.
Key Features of the Neoliner Origin
- Wind-Powered Design: Equipped with two masts and 3,000 square meters of sails.
- Lower Emissions: Cuts fuel consumption five times compared to conventional cargo ships by reducing speed from 15 knots to 11 knots.
- Freight Capacity: Can transport 5,300 tonnes of cargo across long distances.
Maritime Trade & Environmental Impact
- 90% of global trade moves by sea, contributing to 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
- Wind-powered cargo ships like the Neoliner Origin offer a sustainable alternative to reduce shipping emissions.
Next Steps & Voyage Plans
- The ship will undergo six months of fitting-out before departing Turkey in the summer of 2025.
- Its first route includes stops at Saint-Nazaire (France), Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, Baltimore (USA), and Halifax (Canada).
- A second ship is already in the pipeline, with construction set to begin soon.
The Neoliner Origin project is supported by France’s public investment bank (BPI) and French shipping giant CMA-CGM, marking a significant push toward eco-friendly maritime solutions.
