CLdN, reports that it is launching a new service that will help prospective partners meet more stringent EU environmental standards. FuelEU Maritime, or FEUM, is the directive that focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime sector by promoting renewable and low-carbon fuels. However, that comes with tremendous financial challenges and as biofuels provide vast well-to-wake and tank-to-wake emission reductions and are 50-150 percent more expensive compared to conventional fossil fuels.
Challenges of Biofuels and the Financial Penalties for Non-Compliance
Jasper Meireman, Head of Shipping Operations at CLdN, elaborates on the challenges posed by biofuels: “Biofuels are significantly more expensive and present procurement challenges for companies that do not have the ability to bunker biofuels or are irregularly sailing in EU waters. The financial penalties for not meeting the requirements of FEUM are significant. For example, a capesize vessel sailing from South America to Rotterdam would incur penalties of some $50,000 should the vessel not be fuelled with the required tonnage of biofuel to meet the regulatory requirements.”
Pooling – A Flexible Solution for Compliance
Pooling is one of the mechanisms that offer flexibility to ship owners and operators in achieving regulatory compliance without attracting penalties. Companies can combine the performance of different ships, using the over-performance of one vessel to offset the under-performance of others, as long as the total pooled compliance is positive. This system will encourage the adoption of more advanced technologies and reward those who exceed the requirements.
CLdN’s Contribution to Compliance and Cost Reduction
Jasper Meireman further explains: “CLdN is one of the largest short sea shipping operators in the EU. We own more than 30 vessels that sail up to 2.5 million nautical miles per year, mainly in EU waters. We operate reliable and fixed routes delivering cargo for our customers. All our ships are capable of using either biodiesel or bio-LNG, and by adapting our fuel mix to use higher proportions of sustainable biofuels, we can help other ship owners and operators comply with the regulations and reduce costs.”
High-Performance Fleet of CLdN
CLdN’s fleet is unparalleled with more than 30 vessels and superior CO2 emission efficiency. In 2023, its weighted average fleet emissions stood at 39g CO2/tonne-km, outperforming the next best short sea competitor by 19%. The consistency in the fuel consumption and emissions abatement of the company is evident through continued investments in new, larger, more fuel-efficient ships and eco-upgrades for existing vessels.
