Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Be Forward Co., Ltd. to implement a “Book and Claim” service for used car transport to Africa. This agreement marks Be Forward as the first customer to use the low-carbon shipping initiative, reinforcing its commitment to decarbonizing marine transport.
Key Highlights of the Agreement
- Contract Term: 5 years, starting April 2025.
- Sustainability Commitment: Be Forward will use MOL’s LNG-fueled car carriers, enabling it to claim the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction value through certification.
- MOL’s Role:
- Continue reducing its own GHG emissions by introducing new LNG-fueled car carriers.
- Support stakeholders in reducing their carbon footprint through innovative partnerships.
- Align with its goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.
What is “Book and Claim”?
The “Book and Claim” system allows customers to:
- Book GHG reductions achieved through low-carbon ship transport services.
- Claim the GHG reduction value allocated to them through certified documentation.
This initiative supports low-carbon logistics while ensuring transparency and accountability in emissions reduction efforts.
Industry Impact
With this partnership, MOL and Be Forward set a new benchmark for sustainable maritime logistics. The initiative contributes to global decarbonization efforts and strengthens Africa’s supply chain sustainability by reducing the carbon footprint of vehicle transportation.
