Ship It Zero Applauds IKEA’s Commitment To Green Shipping But Calls For Greater Ambition

14

The Ship It Zero coalition, led by Pacific Environment, has commended IKEA for its continued focus on maritime shipping decarbonization, as reflected in the company’s FY24 Climate and Sustainability reports. As a leading retailer in green shipping, IKEA is encouraged to influence other retailers to transition towards zero-emission ships and commit to truly green fuels.

Statement from Ship It Zero

Jonathan Butler, Climate Campaign Manager for Corporate at Pacific Environment, acknowledged IKEA’s efforts but urged the company to take even bolder steps:

“We appreciate IKEA’s commitment to decarbonization, as shipping is a major industry reliant on fossil fuels that threaten public health, the environment, and the climate. However, biofuels are not a permanent solution. We call on IKEA to lead by example by embracing truly green maritime fuels and working towards a zero-emission shipping future.

Investing in new systems and infrastructure, such as book and claim, is a transitional step, but larger, more ambitious efforts will be needed to decarbonize shipping on a science-aligned timeline.”

Background on Ship It Zero’s Decarbonization Reports

  • In November 2024, the Ship It Zero campaign released its 2024 Retailer Shipping Decarbonization Progress Reports, urging major retailers like IKEA, LG, Samsung, and Home Depot to improve their shipping decarbonization efforts.
  • In 2023, IKEA earned a B+ rating, the highest overall score in Ship It Zero’s Decarbonization Report Card.
  • Despite IKEA’s progress, Ship It Zero emphasizes that the company must do more to align its actions with its ambitious climate commitments.

Call to Action for IKEA

Ship It Zero urges IKEA to:
Go beyond research and development of zero-emission technology and start implementing tangible solutions.
Negotiate with carriers to transport goods on shore power-equipped ships.
Lead by example in pushing for an industry-wide shift towards zero-emission shipping.

As global climate challenges intensify, Ship It Zero calls on IKEA to step up and set a new standard for retailers in the maritime sector.
