  • Russia’s Transport Ministry will inspect 500 tanker operators for compliance with oil transport rules.
  • The Federal Service for Supervision of Transport (Rostransnadzor) will conduct the checks.
  • The review follows the December 2024 Kerch Strait oil spill involving Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239.
  • The checks will be completed before the 2025 navigation season.
  • Authorities will also review oil transport laws and regulations.

In response to recent oil spills, the Russian Transport Ministry has ordered a large-scale audit of 500 shipping companies handling oil and petroleum products. Rostransnadzor will evaluate their adherence to transport regulations, according to Interfax.

Kerch Strait Oil Spill Incident

On December 15, 2024, two tankers wrecked in the Kerch Strait, spilling 2,400 tonnes of fuel oil after four petroleum product tanks were damaged.

Regulatory Overhaul and Future Measures

The ministry aims to finalize inspections before the 2025 navigation season and will conduct a full review of maritime oil transport regulations to prevent future incidents.
