A cargo vessel transporting munitions sought shelter in the Port of Vigo, Spain, after experiencing damage and the loss of some containers during a severe storm, reports Safety4sea.

Impending Threat

En route from Jordan to Germany, the vessel was transporting howitzers and shells. During transit, Storm Eowyn caused significant cargo movement, resulting in nine of the 96 containers breaking free and sustaining damage. Due to the impending threat of Storm Herminia and the risk of further cargo loss, the vessel was decided to dock at the Port of Vigo.

The ship arrived in Vigo on January 26th and has been stationed at the Transversal Pier, a designated area for vessels carrying dangerous cargo.

Enhanced security measures are in place, with the vessel being guarded by private security, port police, and the civil guard.

A preliminary inspection conducted on February 1st, involving representatives from the shipping company, the port authority, and security personnel, confirmed that the cargo itself remained intact, with only the external structure of the containers showing damage. Currently, the vessel remains docked at the port, and efforts to secure the cargo are ongoing.
