- Klaipeda Port Strengthens Offshore Wind Support with Quay Redevelopment.
Klaipeda Port is taking a significant step in supporting offshore wind energy development with the reconstruction of key quays. This development will enhance the smooth assembly, handling, and transportation of wind turbines, strengthening Lithuania’s renewable energy sector, reports Offshore Energy.
Key Contract and Project Details
The contract for quay reconstruction was awarded to UAB Tilsta, which will upgrade quays at the former International Ferry Port. These quays will be designed to withstand high loads (40 t/m²) and support essential wind turbine logistics. A total of 453 meters of quays will be reconstructed, with dredging efforts deepening the quays from 10 meters to 12 meters, aligning with offshore depth requirements.
Leadership Insights on Port’s Commitment
“The signing of the quays reconstruction contract signals the readiness of Klaipeda Port to take an active part in the development of offshore wind energy. The reconstruction of quays is not only an infrastructure upgrade but also a contribution of Klaipeda Port to the new generation energy projects. We are laying the foundations that will allow for offshore wind energy to become a significant part of the country’s energy sector,” mentioned Algis Latakas, CEO of Klaipeda State Seaport Authority.
Investment Agreement and Environmental Considerations
To effectively support the development of Lithuania’s offshore wind farm- which includes handling, assembling, storing, and ultimately maintaining turbines for decades- Klaipeda State Seaport Authority and Klaipeda Stevedoring Company KLASCO entered into an investment agreement in May 2022. The investment agreement streamlines port infrastructure development, preparing the port for future Baltic Sea wind farms.
The Environmental Protection Agency finalized screening procedures for the project’s environmental impact assessment in November last year and determined that no further assessment was required.
Project Timeline and Financials
The technical design for reconstructing quays No. 149, 150, and 151 was prepared by UAB Hidrosfera, with UAB Tilsta executing the reconstruction work. The operations are expected to be completed by the end of next year, with a contract value of US$37 million (excluding VAT).
Economic and Employment Opportunities
The expansion of the offshore wind energy infrastructure at Klaipeda Port is expected to drive economic growth and create professional opportunities. The project will enable the establishment of specialized service centers and the generation of highly skilled jobs in the renewable energy sector.
