The governor of Russia’s Sakhalin region has declared a high alert after a Chinese cargo ship ran aground off the southwest coast of the island, reports Reuters.
Cargo Ship Runs Aground
Governor Valery Limarenko reported that a ship ran aground in the shallow waters off Sakhalin’s Nevelsky district. He emphasized that no fuel spillage was recorded and there was no threat to the crew. However, the situation required a state of readiness to respond to any potential emergency.
Governor Limarenko later clarified that the grounded vessel was Chinese-flagged. Due to severe storm conditions, marine and diving rescue teams were unable to approach the vessel.
The governor stated that decisions regarding the unloading of the vessel or its removal from the shallows would be made once weather conditions improve. The Sakhalin region, located in Russia’s Far East, encompasses Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands.
