The European Commission has approved €422 million in funding for 39 innovative projects aimed at deploying alternative fuels infrastructure across the EU. This funding, provided through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), will support the transition to cleaner transportation, reports the European Commission.

The selected projects will focus on a range of initiatives aimed at decarbonizing the transport sector. These include the installation of public electric vehicle charging stations, including high-power megawatt chargers for both heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles.

The program will also support the development of hydrogen refueling stations, onshore power installations in ports, and infrastructure for alternative fuels such as ammonia and methanol for shipping. This significant investment aligns with the EU’s broader goals of decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and enhancing the competitiveness of European industries. The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) operates through a continuous rolling call for proposals, enabling regular funding of new and innovative projects throughout the year.

The current call, launched on February 29, 2024, has recently concluded its first evaluation round. The next cut-off date for proposals is June 11, 2025, with approximately €578 million in funding available. AFIF plays a crucial role in the EU’s efforts to expand the availability of alternative fuel infrastructure across its trans-European transport network. The priorities of AFIF are also aligned with the ReFuelEU Aviation and FuelEU Maritime Regulations, which aim to decarbonize the aviation and maritime sectors.
