HD Hyundai Marine Solution, a subsidiary of HD Hyundai, has successfully deployed its AI-powered route optimization system on domestic commercial vessels in South Korea. This groundbreaking implementation is the first of its kind and is expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption and harmful emissions, according to Offshore Energy.
Twin Ship Verification
According to HD Hyundai Marine Solution, one of the ships to have the OceanWise system installed is SK Shipping’s 318,000 dwt crude oil carrier C.Brave. This follows a January 2025 contract signed with SK Shipping and Hyundai Glovis to equip several vessels owned by these companies with the OceanWise solution.
OceanWise utilizes big data and AI algorithms to suggest optimal routes for ships, aiming to minimize fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This aligns with the maritime industry’s increasing emphasis on sustainability and operational efficiency.
The practical application of OceanWise was successfully verified through a prior arrangement with HD Hyundai Oilbank, commencing in April 2024.
Performance tests conducted across 13 routes, covering a total of 106,000 kilometers, demonstrated an average fuel saving of 5.3%. This translates to an estimated fuel cost reduction of approximately KRW 350 million (circa $240,973) for a vessel consuming 10,000 tons of fuel annually.
HD Hyundai Marine Solution emphasized that the accuracy and objectivity of these experiments were further validated through a “twin ship verification method,” a pioneering approach in this field.
Unique Approach
This unique approach involved simultaneously launching a comparative test vessel alongside a control ship on the same route, followed by a swap of captains to eliminate potential biases and enhance the reliability of data collection.
HD Hyundai Marine Solution emphasized that the trust built through these real-world demonstrations with cargo owners and shipping companies was crucial in securing the supply contract. The company believes that the proven effectiveness of OceanWise will establish it as a standard for decarbonization solutions in the future ship market.
Furthermore, HD Hyundai Marine Solution plans to expand the application of OceanWise across all vessel types and sizes. The company has actively collaborated with other industry stakeholders to test and refine the OceanWise solution.
