NH3 Clean Energy, formerly known as Hexagon Energy Materials, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Pilbara Ports Authority to explore options for exporting 600,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of clean ammonia from its WAH2 project.
Key Details of the MoU
- The 12-month agreement aims to establish operational arrangements and binding agreements to support ammonia exports.
- The MoU covers ship loading for both export and bunkering customers.
- A new-build pipeline will transport ammonia from the WAH2 plant to the Port of Dampier, where it will be loaded onto ships at the bulk liquids berth, subject to availability and commercial agreements.
Strategic Importance of the WAH2 Project
- The project will supply low-emissions ammonia to Japan, South Korea, and other Asia-Pacific economies focused on decarbonization.
- It is also expected to provide decarbonized bunker fuel for bulk carriers transporting iron ore from Australia to Asia.
- NH3 aims to reach Final Investment Decision (FID) in the first half of 2026.
Project Timeline and Development
- Pre-FEED engineering work has been completed.
- The project is on track to enter Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) by the end of Q1 2025.
NH3 Chairman Charles Whitfield emphasized the significance of Pilbara Ports as a key hub for clean ammonia exports and reiterated the company’s commitment to accelerating project milestones.
