Technology group Wärtsilä has signed a 12-year licensing and cooperation agreement with Elomatic, an international consulting and engineering company, to integrate and market Elogrid, a transverse thruster grid technology designed to reduce fuel consumption and enhance thruster performance.
Key Highlights of the Agreement
- Wärtsilä gains rights to sell, manufacture, install, and maintain the Elogrid technology within agreed sales areas.
- The solution will be marketed as ‘ELOGRID™ by Wärtsilä’.
- The agreement includes intermediate checkpoints to assess progress.
Advantages of Elogrid Technology
- Optimized water flow along the hull and into the thruster tunnel, enabling more efficient use of full thruster capacity.
- Lower fuel consumption, supporting decarbonization efforts in the marine industry.
- Reduced noise and vibration, enhancing passenger and crew comfort on cruise ships and ferries.
Market Potential and Applications
- Suitable for most vessels with transverse thrusters, particularly those with large thrusters operating at moderate to high speeds.
- Offers a combined hydrodynamic solution when integrated with Wärtsilä’s thrusters.
Lauri Tiainen, Director of Thruster and Propulsion Control Systems at Wärtsilä Marine, emphasized that Elogrid helps vessel owners lower operational costs while meeting stringent environmental regulations.
Rami Hirsimäki, Senior Vice President Marine at Elomatic, expressed confidence that Wärtsilä’s global reach will help expand the market for Elogrid and support industry-wide emission reduction efforts.
