The master plan for upgrading the Port of Thessaloniki, the largest in Northern Greece, has been officially approved by the Hellenic Republic President, reports Greek Travel Pages.

Upgrading Key Areas

Following the approval of both the updated master plan and the Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment, the Thessaloniki Port Authority (ThPA) is poised to invest 180 million euros in modernizing its infrastructure.

These investments will focus on upgrading key areas, including the Old Customs Station Building and Pier VI. A key aspect of these upgrades is the expansion of Pier VI, a crucial step in enhancing the port’s competitiveness and commercial activity.

The modernized Pier VI will be capable of accommodating main liner container vessels with capacities of up to 24,000 TEU, significantly strengthening Thessaloniki Port’s international standing.

Improved Connectivity

Furthermore, the port’s operational capacity will be enhanced through improved connectivity with the railway and road networks, including the Patras–Athens–Thessaloniki-Evzoni corridor and the Egnatia Motorway.

These improvements, along with non-mandatory investments aimed at fostering cross-border synergies, will strengthen the port’s competitive edge and contribute to the broader regional development of Thessaloniki.

Maritime Minister Christos Stylianides emphasized the significance of this Presidential Decree, stating that it marks a crucial milestone in the history and future of the Port of Thessaloniki.
