- Nearly 90% of companies raised wages in 2024, improving seafarer retention and reducing crew fluctuations.
- Despite recruitment improvements, a significant shortage of competent seafarers persists.
- Crew managers are diversifying recruitment strategies by sourcing talent from a wider range of countries.
- The growing complexity of crew management is highlighted by an increase in seniority and a shift towards reporting to top management.
Danica Crewing Specialists’ 2024 survey reveals that salary increases have played a significant role in improving seafarer retention. Almost 90% of companies surveyed raised crew wages, with senior officers, junior officers, and senior ratings benefiting the most. The increase in wages has contributed to a reduction in crew fluctuations, indicating an improvement in retention rates, according to American Journal of Transportation.
Challenges in Recruiting Competent Seafarers
Despite an overall improvement in the recruitment situation, the survey highlights concerns about the shortage of competent seafarers. While fewer crew managers reported worsened recruitment, about one-third of respondents still experienced difficulties in attracting qualified personnel. The challenge seems to be less about the number of available seafarers and more about their competence.
Expanding Recruitment Strategies
Crew managers are diversifying their recruitment strategies by sourcing talent from a broader range of countries. This approach helps mitigate risks in crew supply chains, particularly in the wake of global disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Increased Seniority and Importance of Crewing Departments
The survey data also shows a trend of increasing seniority among crew managers, with a significant number reporting directly to the highest levels of management. This shift suggests that shipping companies are placing a higher priority on effective crewing and crew management.
Growing Complexity of Crewing Operations
The 2024 survey results indicate that crew managers are finding their jobs increasingly complex, with few reporting any ease in their roles. The challenge of managing and retaining qualified crew members continues to be a significant concern for the industry.
