Port of Long Beach Kicks Off 2025 with Strong Performance

The Port of Long Beach started the year with a record-breaking performance in January, moving 952,733 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 41.4% from January of the previous year. This was a notable 18.9% increase compared to the record set in January 2022, demonstrating the port’s continued growth and robust handling of cargo.

Growth in Imports and Exports


Imports at the Port surged 45%, totaling 471,649 TEUs, while exports saw a 14% increase to 98,655 TEUs. This uptick in both imports and exports indicates strong trade activities and efficient handling of cargo as retailers moved goods ahead of anticipated tariffs on products from China, Mexico, and Canada.

Increase in Empty Containers


A significant increase in empty containers passing through the port was also recorded, rising 45.9% to 382,430 TEUs. This increase highlights the continued flow of goods and the port’s capacity to manage and distribute a high volume of cargo.

Focus on Competitiveness and Sustainability


Port officials, including CEO Mario Cordero and Long Beach Harbor Commission President Bonnie Lowenthal, emphasized the ongoing efforts to maintain competitiveness and sustainability. Despite uncertainties in the global supply chain, the port remains committed to providing exceptional customer service and ensuring growth through sustainable practices.

Eighth Consecutive Month of Year-over-Year Growth


The strong January results mark the eighth consecutive month of year-over-year cargo increases at the Port of Long Beach. This follows a record-breaking year in 2024, where 9,649,724 TEUs were handled, solidifying the port’s position as a key gateway for trans-Pacific trade.
