Hanwha Ocean Orders Four MAN B&W ME-GI Engines For LNG Carriers

63

South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean Co. Ltd. has placed an order for four MAN B&W 5G70ME-GI Mk10.5 engines for the construction of two 174,000 cbm LNG carriers. The shipowner remains undisclosed, and the contract includes an option for two additional vessels.

The engines will be built by Hanwha Engine Co. Ltd. in South Korea and will feature MAN Energy Solutions’ Exhaust Gas Recirculation ByPass (EGRBP) system, enhancing emissions performance.

Advancing LNG Carrier Technology

Bjarne Foldager, Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions, emphasized the increasing adoption of ME-GI engines in the LNG carrier sector:
“It’s very satisfying to see our ME-GI engine orders pick up momentum within the important LNG carrier segment. The ME-GI’s mature technology delivers guaranteed, extremely low levels of methane slip, making it the most future-proof methane engine on the market.”

Christian Ludwig, Head of Two-Stroke Sales and Promotion at MAN Energy Solutions, highlighted the engine’s proven success:
“To date, we have achieved over 890 ME-GI references, either on order or in service, with more than 110 within the LNG carrier segment alone. The ME-GI engine offers best-in-class performance, the highest thermal efficiency for methane-fueled two-stroke engines, and millions of reliable operating hours. Its ability to operate on bio-methane and synthetic natural gas provides a viable decarbonization pathway for shipowners.”

ME-GI: The Industry Standard for LNG-Fueled Propulsion

The ME-GI (-Gas Injection) engine has become the standard propulsion system for LNG-fueled ships, including RoRo vessels, PCTCs, container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, and LNG carriers. Key advantages include:

  • Minimal methane slip, ensuring environmental compliance
  • High thermal efficiency and operational stability
  • Seamless transition between gas and diesel operation
  • Reliable load response, requiring only minimal pilot-oil additions

Expanding the Dual-Fuel Portfolio

In addition to ME-GI, MAN Energy Solutions has developed the ME-LGI (-Liquid Gas Injection) dual-fuel engine, supporting sustainable fuels like green methanol, further expanding low-carbon shipping options.

With this latest order, Hanwha Ocean reinforces its role in advancing LNG carrier efficiency and sustainability, ensuring its vessels are equipped with future-proof propulsion technologies.
