HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) has achieved a major milestone in maritime innovation with the approval in principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its pioneering nuclear-propelled containership.
A Revolutionary Nuclear Propulsion System
The 15,000 TEU vessel is designed to be powered by an advanced molten salt reactor (MSR), generating heat that drives a supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) system for efficient power generation. This groundbreaking technology marks a significant step toward decarbonization in commercial shipping.
ABS, which issued the first industry-wide requirements for floating nuclear power in October 2023, conducted detailed design reviews to ensure compliance with class regulations.
A Game-Changer for Maritime Decarbonization
ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki emphasized the transformative potential of advanced nuclear reactors, stating: These reactors are not only a global decarbonization solution but also a disruptor in commercial shipping. They change vessel design, operations, and economic models, playing a crucial role in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Senior Vice President Sangmin Park of HD KSOE highlighted the safety advantages of fourth-generation small modular reactors (SMRs), which are currently in the demonstration phase. He noted that their application in large container ships could reduce risk levels compared to certain alternative fuel systems.
Next Steps and Industry Collaboration
Following the AIP, HD KSOE and ABS will continue collaborating to advance the design and explore the feasibility of nuclear propulsion in commercial shipping.
ABS is at the forefront of research into advanced nuclear reactor technologies for maritime use, working closely with the U.S. Department of Energy to address barriers to nuclear adoption in shipping.
