ABB has obtained orders from shipyards in China and South Korea to equip 18 and 12 liquified natural gas (LNG) carriers with permanent magnet shaft generator systems, respectively. These ships are due for delivery between 2028 and 2030, reports ABB.

Boosting Operational Efficiency with ABB’s Shaft Generator System

By drawing power from the main engine, ABB’s permanent magnet shaft generator system improves fuel efficiency by a much larger margin than solutions based on auxiliary engines. Not having to use high-speed, fuel-guzzling auxiliary engines on trips enables ship operators to save fuel and lower operating costs.

Increased Efficiency Over Conventional Solutions

The permanent magnet shaft generator performs better than induction and electrically excited synchronous machines at full and part load. The system can save up to four per cent in fuel costs compared to traditional alternatives, estimates ABB. Fuel efficiency can be raised by a further one per cent when combined with ABB’s ACS880 Converter and Control System.

Space and Weight Savings for Optimized Vessel Design

Removing the excitation unit within the converter, as well as the compactness of the permanent magnet shaft generator, allows for a maximum of 20 per cent saving in weight and space. The simplified structure of the device also contributes to the reduction of installation and maintenance expenses, thus constituting a cost-efficient option for shipowners in efforts to keep up with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonization objectives.

ABB’s Commitment to Fuel Efficiency and Decarbonization

Michael Christensen, Global Segment Responsible for Cargo Vessels, ABB Marine & Ports, highlighted the significance of these orders, stating: “We are proud to win the largest ever combined orders for our permanent magnet shaft generator systems, with LNG carrier deliveries set for multiple AMEA owners from shipbuilders in China and South Korea. These agreements include first-time customers for the permanent magnet shaft generator system, further confirming its benefits across a wide scope of cargo vessel types to serve shipping’s need for the enhanced fuel efficiency that reduces operating costs and helps them to meet decarbonization requirements.”
