- World’s Largest Container Port is Capable of handling up to 65 million TEUs annually.
- Finger piers and caisson quay walls create 115 hectares of additional land.
- 50% of fill materials are reused, saving S$2 billion in reclamation costs.
When fully operational in four stages, Tuas Port will be the world’s largest single container port, with the capacity to handle 65 million TEUs annually. By concentrating Singapore’s container operations in one place, Tuas Port minimises inter-terminal haulage activities and carbon emissions by a large margin, reports WPSP.
Innovative Land and Sea Utilization
To optimize finite land and sea space, Tuas Port embraces finger-piers with a caisson quay wall, adding 115 hectares of land. The long linear berths and a design depth of -23m at Chart Datum enable the port to handle mega container ships of over 450m in length. Above Ground Space will also add 240 hectares for port-related purposes.
Commitment to Sustainability
One of the major considerations in Tuas Port construction is sustainability. As a response to increasing sea levels, the working platform of the port has been designed at 5m above MSL. Over 50% of reclamation materials in Phases 1 and 2 are supplied by dredged material and excavation soil from works, decreasing sand dependency for reclamation and saving more than S$2 billion in material expense.
Environmental Protection Measures
To protect marine environments and sensitive commercial water intakes, environmental effect assessments were performed to set firm Environmental Quality Objectives. A S$6 million coral transplantation program, through nature volunteers and NGOs, was carried out and achieved an 80% success rate for corals translocated.
Digital and Automated Future
Apart from physical infrastructure, Tuas Port will be a digitally sophisticated and automated port. Digital technologies like Digitalport@SG and the Just-in-Time System will automate vessel clearance and enhance ship turnaround times. Automated and electric port equipment will increase productivity, and with the Maritime Singapore Green Initiative, Tuas Port is poised to be the future-proof port.
