Enagás is introducing a new BioLNG supply service at its Barcelona and Huelva regasification terminals. This initiative will enable the loading of BioLNG, a decarbonized fuel, onto tankers and ships. This move supports Enagás’s goal of contributing to European decarbonization efforts, reports Enagas.
Boosting Maritime Decarbonization
A new bioLNG service, set to launch in March, will utilize interconnected infrastructure to recognize biomethane injected into the gas network as BioLNG, a liquid biofuel derived from organic waste. This service will be provided from regasification terminals in Barcelona and Huelva.
These terminals have achieved compliance with environmental, social, and traceability standards set by the ISCC EU and the European Commission.
This initiative builds on Enagás’s decade-long efforts in maritime transport decarbonization, including projects like Core LNGas Hive and LNGas Hive 2, and investments in small-scale infrastructure. The company has also been involved in developing ship refueling procedures and regulations.
LNG Bunkering Growth
LNG bunkering has experienced significant growth in Spain, with activity increasing ninefold from 2022 to 3.8 TWh in 2024. The majority of this supply was loaded onto small vessels, with a smaller portion supplied by tankers.
The Huelva and Barcelona terminals have been responsible for almost all LNG bunkering in Spain in 2024, completing over 300 refuelings to small vessels since operations began.
The new bioLNG service is expected to further boost this growth, demonstrating Enagás’s commitment to sustainability and a cleaner future.
