Ahead of the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal announcement on February 26th, the Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII) is advocating for stronger EU action on methane emissions from shipping, reports Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII).
Clean Shipping
MAMII believes that implementing specific measures can establish Europe as a leader in clean shipping and stimulate economic growth.
They highlight LNG as a current primary methane fuel source, with potential for bio-methane and e-methane. While LNG is considered a step in decarbonization, unregulated methane emissions jeopardize its climate advantages.
MAMII cautions that Europe could lag in bio-methane and e-methane development, both of which could utilize existing ship engines and port infrastructure.
MAMII’s recommendations center on:
- Clear Regulations:
- The EU should establish regulations that promote methane reduction through incentives and penalties. Incentives should encourage investments in low-methane engines and proven mitigation technologies while considering variations in machinery efficiency.
- The carbon footprint of methane varies depending on its source. Suppliers who reduce, measure and report emissions should be rewarded, with regulators adjusting default values to reflect actual improvements.
- Investment: Europe can lead in methane abatement and measurement technology, benefiting both industry and climate goals. EU funding should focus on scaling and commercializing these solutions.
