12 Crew Members Freed a Year After Cocaine Seizure

After a prolonged detention of over a year, 21 Vietnamese crew members of a bulk carrier have been released from Indian custody, reports Baird Maritime.

Crew released after 15-Month detention

The vessel was seized at Paradip Port in December 2023 following the discovery of approximately 22 kilograms of cocaine, valued at around Rs 220 crore, concealed on board.

The crew members endured significant psychological and financial distress during their confinement, with no formal charges filed against them. In November 2024, they staged a protest aboard the vessel, disrupting operations to highlight their plight.

Following legal interventions, the Orissa High Court directed the Customs Department to permit the replacement of the detained crew. This led to the phased release of the original crew members and their subsequent repatriation. Despite the crew’s release, the vessel remains under detention as investigations continue.

This incident underscores the complexities of maritime drug enforcement and the profound impact such detentions can have on seafarers’ lives.
