SOHAR Port And Freezone Begins Dredging For Marsa LNG Project

22

SOHAR Port and Freezone has officially launched dredging operations for the Marsa LNG project, a key initiative positioning SOHAR as the Middle East’s first LNG bunkering hub. The dredging is being conducted by Boskalis’ Coastway and Willem van Oranje Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers, which will remove approximately four million cubic meters of material to create a dedicated approach channel and berth pocket for the LNG plant.

Milestone in Oman’s Energy Transition

With a US$1.6 billion investment, Marsa LNG is a cornerstone of Oman’s energy transition, reinforcing SOHAR’s role as a key player in sustainable maritime growth. The dredging operations are on schedule and are expected to be completed by September 2025, paving the way for world-class LNG infrastructure.

“The arrival of these dredgers marks a major milestone in SOHAR Port and Freezone’s journey to becoming a regional leader in LNG bunkering,” said Emile Hoogsteden, CEO of SOHAR Port. This project lays the foundation for sustainable energy solutions, further strengthening SOHAR’s role as a global trade and innovation hub.

Sustainable LNG Production

Located within SOHAR Port and Freezone, Marsa LNG will produce one million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually, powered by a 300 MW solar plant to ensure operations are driven by renewable energy. The integration of electric-driven technology and modern emissions-reducing design aligns with Oman’s Vision 2040 and its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Transforming Maritime Energy in the Middle East

Once operational, Marsa LNG will provide a cleaner fuel alternative for global shipping, supporting Oman’s economic diversification and solidifying SOHAR’s role as a leader in innovation and sustainability. As one of the most transformative energy projects in the region, it is set to reshape the future of maritime energy solutions.
