A Green Port Pioneer: Thessaloniki Leads Mediterranean Decarbonization Efforts

12

The Port of Thessaloniki (ThPA S.A.) has achieved a significant milestone in maritime decarbonization. It’s the first port in the EU and the Mediterranean to adopt RightShip’s Maritime Emissions Portal (MEP). This integration was made possible through the HELMEPA-led METAVASEA project, with support from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, reports Port of Thessaloniki.

Regional Benchmark

Thessaloniki is launching a one-year pilot program to monitor value chain (Scope 3) emissions from incoming vessels, setting a new sustainability standard in the region. This initiative aims to provide valuable data for targeted emissions reduction strategies.

Athanasios Liagkos, Executive Chairman of ThPA S.A., emphasized the port’s commitment to sustainability and its role in promoting greener practices within the maritime industry. He also highlighted the port’s engagement with the community and its dedication to environmental, social, and governance principles.

Olga Stavropoulou, Director General of HELMEPA, stated that the organization’s METAVASEA initiative, focused on decarbonization in the Eastern Mediterranean, will benefit from the data gathered during this pilot, helping to assess the industry’s readiness for new fuels and identify challenges in improving operational efficiency.

Collaborative Effort

The METAVASEA project, led by HELMEPA in collaboration with numerous partners including Lloyd’s Register and the World Maritime University, focuses on a people-centered transition for maritime decarbonization in the Eastern Mediterranean. This five-year initiative, supported by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, aims to:

  • Infrastructure Mapping:
    • Map existing infrastructure for maritime decarbonization in Greece, Cyprus, and the broader region.
  • Workforce Empowerment:
    • Develop flexible training tools for seafarers, port workers, and maritime executives to facilitate retraining.
  • Training and Development:
    • Provide training and re-skilling/up-skilling opportunities for 1,500 employees on new fuels, safety culture, digital transition, and environmental awareness.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Enhance participation of shipping companies and port organizations in decarbonization initiatives.
  • Preparedness Assessment:
    • Measure the preparedness of shipping and coastal communities for the use of new fuels, identifying opportunities and challenges.
  • Operational Efficiency:
    • Improve operational efficiency in ship and port operations to prevent maritime accidents.
  • Public Awareness:
    • Raise awareness among students, teachers, and the general public in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Thessaloniki pilot program utilizes RightShip’s Maritime Emissions Portal (MEP) to accurately monitor maritime emissions. ThPA S.A.’s adoption of the MEP demonstrates its dedication to sustainability and its commitment to aligning operations with global decarbonization goals.
