The Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT), operated by ICTSI at the Port of Cagayan de Oro in the Philippines, has begun using solar power exclusively during daylight hours, reports AJOT.
Hybrid Energy
The Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT) has begun utilizing a hybrid energy strategy, incorporating solar power into its operations. Starting February 14th, MCT is sourcing solar energy through a retail supply contract with PrimeRES Energy Corporation, operating within the Philippine energy department’s RCOA framework.
During daylight hours, MCT will utilize solar power generated by PrimeRES. To ensure a continuous 24/7 power supply, the terminal will switch to PrimeRES’s broader supply portfolio at night, which includes the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM). This combined approach aims to maximize the use of renewable energy while maintaining consistent and reliable operations.
PrimeRES Energy Corporation, a licensed retail electricity supplier, focuses on renewable energy and partners with distribution utilities and electric cooperatives. They provide power to eligible customers, drawing from Prime Infra’s renewable energy portfolio and other sources.
Affordable Power
Daniel O. Arago, Chief Operating Officer of PrimeRES Energy Corporation, highlighted the partnership with MCT to demonstrate their commitment to providing affordable and reliable power solutions. He expressed appreciation for MCT’s trust and shared vision of delivering environmentally friendly energy at competitive prices.
The shift to PrimeRES is projected to offer MCT competitive electricity rates and potential cost savings.
ICTSI, through MICTSI, recently secured a 25-year extension to operate MCT and plans to invest over $100 million in infrastructure upgrades to enhance capacity and efficiency. This investment includes a 300-meter berth extension and new equipment acquisitions to support growing cargo volumes. The upgrades are expected to increase the terminal’s annual capacity beyond 350,000 TEUs and accommodate larger vessels, improving connectivity for Mindanao’s trade. This expansion supports government initiatives to attract investment and business activity to the region.
