Energy firm Edison successfully executed a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation for TUI Cruises cruise ship Mein Schiff Relax at the Italian port of Trieste on February 24, reports Manifold Times.
LNG Carrier Ravenna Knutsen Facilitates Operation
The bunkering operation was performed by the 30,000 cubic meter LNG carrier Ravenna Knutsen, which was purpose-built by Edison for small-scale LNG operations. This is another milestone for the company to strengthen its foothold in the LNG bunkering market in Italy.
Strengthening LNG Infrastructure in the Adriatic
Mein Schiff Relax’s refuelling comes on the heels of a series of ship-to-ship refuelling operations by Edison in 2024 in the Adriatic Sea—the first of their type in the area of the Mediterranean. This is a pointer to the increased strategic significance of the Adriatic Sea for supplying and refuelling alternative fuels in the maritime industry.
Edison’s LNG Expansion in Italy
Edison further develops its LNG infrastructure through the Ravenna Knutsen and the addition of a 20,000 cubic meter coastal LNG storage in Ravenna. This allows it to supply both tankers and bunker vessels, solidifying its hold in the LNG market.
Regulatory Compliance and Environmental Commitment
Ravenna port became the first Italian node in the trans-European TEN-T transport network to include alternative fuel solutions. This is consistent with the European DAFI directive and International Maritime Organization (IMO) rules, which limit sulphur emissions from ships in special areas like the Mediterranean.
