LNG-Fueled Car Carrier Earns High Decarbonization Rating

18

The OCEANUS HIGHWAY is a new LNG-fueled car carrier owned by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) that has been recognized for its environmentally friendly and innovative design. It was evaluated by ClassNK and received an “A” rating under the Zero-Emission Accelerating Ship Finance Program, which is a financial initiative aimed at promoting decarbonization in the shipping industry.

What is the Zero-Emission Accelerating Ship Finance Program?

This program is a joint effort by the Development Bank of Japan (DBJ) and ClassNK to support ships that contribute to environmental sustainability. The program:

  • Evaluates ships based on their decarbonization efforts, environmental performance, and innovation.
  • Provides financing to companies investing in sustainable ship technologies.

Why Was the OCEANUS HIGHWAY Highly Rated?

The ship was recognized for its use of LNG (liquefied natural gas) fuel, which significantly reduces harmful emissions. Key benefits include:
✅ 25% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional fuel oil.
✅ Lower nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and particulate matter (PM) emissions, helping it meet strict IMO (International Maritime Organization) environmental regulations.

Why is This Important?

The shipping industry is under pressure to reduce its carbon footprint due to increasing environmental regulations. LNG-fueled ships like OCEANUS HIGHWAY help in this transition by:

  • Lowering greenhouse gas emissions to fight climate change.
  • Complying with international regulations, avoiding penalties and future restrictions.
  • Setting an example for the industry to move towards more sustainable fuel alternatives.

What’s Next?

Through this program, DBJ and ClassNK will continue to support the transition to low- and zero-carbon shipping, encouraging more shipbuilders and shipping companies to invest in sustainable solutions. This helps make the global maritime industry greener and more efficient.
