- MOL and SMT Shipping signed an MoU to enhance Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) transport.
- The partnership ensures safe, efficient shipping to support the steel industry’s CO₂ reduction goals.
- MOL aims to expand sustainable marine logistics for a low-carbon future.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SMT Shipping to explore safe and efficient ocean transport for Direct Reduced Iron (DRI). With the steel industry shifting towards low-carbon alternatives, DRI—produced using natural gas or hydrogen—offers a more sustainable option than coal-based blast furnaces.
Ensuring Safe and Efficient DRI Shipping
Transporting DRI requires specialized handling to prevent overheating. SMT Shipping, a global leader in DRI transport, and MOL, with its extensive experience in steel logistics, will collaborate to enhance the industry’s supply chain. The joint study will focus on expanding transport capacity while implementing advanced safety measures.
MOL’s Vision for a Greener Future
As one of the world’s largest shipping companies, MOL aims to drive innovation in sustainable marine logistics. By integrating advanced shipping technologies and infrastructure, MOL is strengthening its role as a global social infrastructure provider, supporting industries in their transition to a low-carbon future.
