The Port of Melbourne posted a year-on-year (YoY) growth in container throughput for January 2025 at 289,000 TEUs, reports Port News.
Import and Export Volume Growth
- Full container imports (excluding Bass Strait) grew to 115,000 TEUs, led by robust demand for furniture, home appliances, and paperboard.
- Full container exports (excluding Bass Strait) grew to 46,000 TEUs, showing positive trade momentum.
Increase in Non-Container Trade
The port’s non-container trade for January amounted to 2.01 million revenue tonnes, up by 16% YoY (282,000 revenue tonnes) from January 2024.
The Port of Melbourne’s performance conforms to Australia’s expected annual growth in port throughput by 3.5%, driven by growing trade with the Asia-Pacific region.
