DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insights (AFI) platform has revealed that 33 out of 34 alternative-fuelled vessel orders placed in February were for LNG-fuelled container ships, reaffirming the dominance of LNG in maritime decarbonization trends.

Key Highlights

  • LNG Leads the Market – The majority of new orders were for LNG-fuelled container ships, with just one order placed for an ammonia-fuelled general cargo vessel.
  • Surge in LNG Bunkering Infrastructure – Eight LNG bunkering vessels were ordered in February, marking a 50% expansion in the LNG bunker vessel orderbook.
  • Strong Growth in LNG-Powered Fleet – The number of LNG-fuelled vessels in operation is expected to double by 2030, driving increased demand for supporting LNG bunkering infrastructure.
  • Alternative Fuels Lag Behind – No new orders for methanol, LPG, or hydrogen-fuelled vessels were recorded in the first two months of 2025. In contrast, 166 methanol-fuelled vessels were ordered in 2024.

Industry Insights:

“LNG remains the headline story, with a clear continuation of the trend towards these vessels evident since mid-2024,” said Jason Stefanatos, Global Decarbonization Director at DNV Maritime.

Stefanatos also noted that February saw a strong recovery in alternative-fuelled vessel orders following a slow January, making it the highest month since October 2024.

As the shipping industry moves toward decarbonization, the continued investment in LNG infrastructure signals its pivotal role in the near-term energy transition, even as the search for long-term zero-emission fuels continues.
