Bremen Ports Advance Climate Protection With Methanol-Ready Infrastructure

13

Climate protection is increasingly shaping the shipping industry, with alternative propulsion systems becoming the norm for new and retrofitted ships. Bremen’s ports are at the forefront of this transformation, now accommodating methanol-powered vessels alongside LNG (liquefied natural gas) and conventional fuel ships.

The Rise of Methanol as an Alternative Fuel

  • Methanol is gaining traction as a sustainable alternative to LNG, which has dominated low-emission maritime fuels since 2015.
  • Experts predict that methanol will surpass LNG in the medium term, becoming the preferred low-carbon shipping fuel.

Bremen’s Readiness for Methanol Bunkering

Kristina Vogt, Bremen’s Senator for Economic Affairs, Ports, and Transformation, highlighted the city’s preparedness, stating:

“With the regulations now clear, we are well positioned and Bremen also has the best structural prerequisites: There is already methanol-capable storage capacity on the Weser, bunker suppliers in Bremerhaven are looking into expanding, and several companies are involved in the production of green methanol. A lot is happening in this area – and Bremen is at the forefront.”

Safe and Efficient Bunkering Procedures

  • Port authorities have introduced clear guidelines for bunkering fuels with a flashpoint below 55°C, such as methanol and LNG.
  • Port Captain Stephan Berger emphasized the importance of safety.

Bremen’s Green Port Strategy

Robert Howe, Managing Director of bremenports, reinforced Bremen’s commitment to sustainability, stating:

“We are supporting and promoting the use of new low-carbon fuels in shipping – this is ultimately active climate protection. The aim must be to enable universal bunkering in our universal ports – regardless of whether methanol, LNG, ammonia or, in future, green hydrogen is pumped into the ship’s tanks. The fact that we already have clear process plans and regulations for LNG and methanol is a very good step in the right direction.”

By embracing methanol and other low-carbon fuels, Bremen’s ports are positioning themselves as leaders in sustainable shipping, ensuring that alternative fuel infrastructure supports the industry’s transition toward greener operations.
