  • Longship has taken delivery of Longearth, an 8,600 dwt ultra-low emission diesel-electric general cargo vessel, the third in a four-vessel series from Atlas Shipyard.
  • Longearth features a diesel-electric propulsion system, reducing fuel consumption by 45% and meeting EU Stage V emission standards.
  • The first two vessels, Longera and Longeon, were delivered in June and October 2024, with the final unit expected soon.
  • Longship has also ordered two 3,700 dwt general cargo vessels from GS Projects, furthering its commitment to eco-friendly shipping.

Dutch shortsea ship operator and logistics company Longship has recently expanded its fleet with the addition of Longearth, an 8,600 dwt ultra-low emission diesel-electric general cargo vessel. This marks the third unit in a four-vessel series commissioned at Türkiye’s Atlas Shipyard. The Groningen-based shipping company hosted a welcoming ceremony for Longearth on February 28, 2025, following its official launch and christening in June 2024. Before entering service, the vessel underwent extensive preparations to ensure compliance with high standards of efficiency and sustainability, according to Offshore Energy.

Collaborative Design for Enhanced Performance

All four vessels in this series were developed in collaboration with the Netherlands-based naval architecture firm Ankerbeer BV. Equipped with a diesel-electric propulsion system, Longearth is expected to achieve a 45% reduction in fuel consumption compared to conventional vessels of similar size. This innovation is also projected to result in significant reductions in pollutant emissions. The vessel’s design aligns with the EU Stage V standards for non-road mobile machinery (NRWMM) and holds the “Prepared for Methanol C” class notation, indicating its hybrid capability for alternative fuel adoption.

A Series of Sustainable Cargo Vessels

Longship originally placed the order for these four vessels in January 2023, with a focus on both environmental performance and optimized design for the transportation of biomass solid fuels. The first vessel in the series, Longera, was welcomed into the fleet on June 25, 2024, followed by the arrival of Longeon, a 130.5-meter-long cargo vessel, in late October of the same year.

Expanding Fleet with New General Cargo Vessels

Furthering its fleet expansion strategy, Longship recently secured an order for two additional 3,700 dwt general cargo vessels from the Dutch shipyard GS Projects in December 2024. These vessels are expected to be delivered within the year, though the contract value remains undisclosed. This move follows Longship’s continued collaboration with GS Projects, Ship and Steelbuilding (SaS), and Groot Ship Design. The partnership, first revealed in September 2024, underscores Longship’s commitment to advancing ship designs that prioritize fuel efficiency and environmentally friendly technologies.
