Tank Container Fleet Reaches New Milestone

This marks a 3.96% increase from 848,400 units recorded at the start of 2024. Despite a dip in new tank container builds, with 42,100 units constructed in 2024 compared to 56,600 in the previous year, the fleet still grew by over 33,600 units.

The industry remains dominated by a few key players, with the top 10 operators holding nearly 50% of the global fleet and the top 10 lessors controlling around 84% of the leasing sector.

The report highlights the resilience of the tank container industry, with growth continuing despite challenges such as geopolitical tensions, weak productivity growth, and aging populations. Paul Gooch, President of ITCO, expressed optimism about the tank container’s role in sustainable and safe intermodal transportation, particularly in a challenging global market.
