UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has received corroborating reports from vessels experiencing GPS interference in the Strait of Hormuz, reports Safety4sea.
GPS interference in the Strait of Hormuz
According to UKMTO, with disruptions lasting several hours, there have been reports from several vessels that have encountered GPS interference in the Strait of Hormuz. The disruptions lasted several hours affecting navigation systems and requiring vessels to rely on backup methods.
“Masters who experience disruption to electronic navigation systems (GPS/AIS/other PNT) anywhere within the UKMTO Voluntary Reporting Area (VRA) are requested to contact UKMTO watchkeepers,” UKMTO stated.
Recently, Polish researchers also conducted a study regarding GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) interference at ground level in the Baltic Sea which can affect maritime navigation, port security, and vessel operations.
