Nautilus General Secretary Calls for Urgent Employment Reforms and Stronger Legal Protections for Women Workers at TUC Women’s Conference.
Urgent Employment Reforms and Legal Protections for Women Workers
At the 2025 TUC Women’s Conference, Mark Dickinson, General Secretary of Nautilus International, emphasized the pressing need for employment reforms and enhanced legal protections for women workers, especially in the maritime industry. He highlighted ongoing issues such as the gender pay gap, occupational segregation, and inadequate maternity leave provisions, particularly for women seafarers, who make up less than 2% of the global maritime workforce.
Dickinson also drew attention to the alarming rates of sexual harassment at sea, where two-thirds of women seafarers report having experienced harassment, with 6% facing sexual assault in the past year. Nautilus is pushing for stronger anti-discrimination laws and fairer working conditions, advocating for collective action to drive change. The union has committed to further supporting women in maritime through initiatives like the Maritime UK Diversity in Maritime Pledge and its Equality and Diversity Forum.
Nautilus International continues to advocate for comprehensive changes in employment conditions, focusing on safety, equality, and inclusion for women at sea.
