- DP World Plans R$2 Billion Investment to Expand Container Capacity.
DP World, the world’s leading logistics and supply chain solutions provider, has signed a long-term strategic partnership with Maersk, the world’s leading maritime transport and logistics provider. The alliance is focused on improving DP World’s terminal in the Port of Santos, Brazil, in terms of maritime services, reports Globe Newswire.
Details of the agreement and expansion plans
DP World has one of the largest private terminals in the Port of Santos. The eight-year contract calls for Maersk to introduce more long-term services while assuring a minimum level of service. Maersk will launch six new services with eight weekly calls in the first year. In 2026, with DP World’s increased capacity, Maersk’s services will be seven with 10 weekly calls.
Today, the terminal processes 1.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year. To meet growing demand, DP World is spending R$450 million to increase its container-handling capacity to 1.7 million TEUs by the end of 2026. The company has also set aside another R$1.6 billion to further boost capacity to 2.1 million TEUs by the end of 2027.
Strengthening DP World’s Presence in Brazil
Márcio Medina, Commercial Vice President at DP World in Brazil, emphasized the strategic importance of this agreement, stating:
“This announcement is another strategic step for DP World in Brazil, reinforcing our presence at the Port of Santos, and accelerating new expansion opportunities in the country. This agreement with Maersk not only allows us to expand our operational capacity for container handling but also ensures long-term access to Brazil’s leading port and logistics hub.”
Maersk’s Commitment to Service Reliability
From Maersk’s perspective, the agreement aligns with its long-term strategy to ensure efficiency and reliability in operations across Latin America. Paulo Ruy, Regional Head of Terminal & Port Procurement for Latin America at Maersk, noted:
“This agreement with DP World secures service capacity for Maersk at the Port of Santos. It aligns with our strategy to ensure reliable and efficient operations for our customers in the region. By having this commercial agreement with DP World, we are able to meet the growing demand for container handling and enhance our service offerings, ensuring that we continue to provide end-to-end logistics solutions, in addition to our stand-alone products.”
Record-Breaking Growth and Investments in the Future
In 2024, DP World registered a new record of container-handling volume in the Port of Santos with more than 1.25 million TEUs, an increase of 14% year-on-year. This increase was triggered by increased container operations and new services introduced. To facilitate its expansion plans, DP World has recently invested $50 million in cutting-edge port equipment, as part of its current $85 million terminal expansion project, which will enable capacity growth to 1.7 million TEUs and further accelerate Brazil’s economic growth.
New Alliance with Rumo for Railway Expansion
Apart from marine services, DP World has also reinforced its logistics chain with a new partnership with Rumo, the leading Brazilian rail operator. This agreement will underpin the establishment of a new grain and fertilizer export terminal with an additional 12.5 million tons of annual operating capacity.
Commitment to Global Trade and Supply Chain Modernization
DP World continues to be dedicated to improving international supply chains through infrastructure modernization, capacity expansion, and the creation of new opportunities for trade in Latin America and other regions. Through ongoing investment and strategic collaboration, the firm is strengthening its position as an important player in international logistics.
