- Containment Efforts Underway After Oil Spill at Keelung Port.
An oil spill occurred at Keelung Port during a routine refuelling operation involving a containership. The spill resulted in oil contamination affecting multiple vessels in the area, reports Lloyd’s List.
Environmental and Safety Issues Agitated
This has raised the issues of environmental management and security measures at the port. Port authorities were alerted to the accident late in the afternoon, following which a rapid response was deployed.
Scope of Contamination and Affected Shipments
Some of the ships, including pilot boats and cargo vessels, experienced oil spillage on their hulls and mooring lines. The impacted pilot boats are being booked for drydocking, while others have postponed departures in anticipation of clean-up operations.
Response Measures Implemented
Containment booms and oil-absorbent products were deployed quickly to limit environmental damage and operational disruption. Local environmental officials approximate that around 100 litres of heavy oil spilt into the harbour as a result of a fuel barge connection breakdown.
Continuing Investigations and Future Action
Port authorities and the shipping company are currently probing the origin of the oil spill to determine the extent of the damage. They are also putting in place measures to avoid such occurrences in the future and improve safety standards at the port.
