  • Simultaneous Transshipment reduces wait times, boosting Mexico’s global trade role.
  • Gemini Cooperation improves East-West trade with 29-liner services.

APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas has reached a significant milestone with the arrival of the first vessel under the Gemini Cooperation, a strategic collaboration between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. This partnership is set to redefine operational efficiency and connectivity in global maritime logistics, reinforcing the port’s critical role in transforming global supply chains.

The Gemini Cooperation, which commenced operations in February 2025, introduces a new, innovative approach to managing East-West trade routes. By reducing the number of port calls per rotation, the initiative enhances terminal efficiency, shortens transit times, and improves overall service reliability, according to APM Terminals.

Enhancing Efficiency Through Simultaneous Transshipment

As part of this initiative, APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas has implemented the Simultaneous Transshipment Connection, a pioneering operation that enables the transfer of containers between two vessels at the same time. This method significantly reduces vessel waiting times and maximizes operational efficiency.

Keith Svendsen, CEO of APM Terminals, emphasized the significance of this partnership:

“The Gemini Cooperation marks the beginning of a new era in maritime trade, enhancing connectivity and efficiency across key routes. For APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas, this initiative strengthens Mexico’s strategic role in global commerce, positioning the terminal as a major gateway for trade within the USMCA region and beyond.”

Mexico’s Role in Global Trade

As the only terminal on the Mexican Pacific executing the Simultaneous Transshipment Connection, APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas is at the forefront of technological advancements in port operations. Beatriz Yera, CEO of APM Terminals Mexico, highlighted the importance of this development:

“The Gemini Cooperation is designed to enhance efficiency and reliability in East-West trade routes, and our terminal plays a crucial role in this effort. Our investments in automation and technology place us in a unique position to support this initiative, further strengthening Mexico’s position as a leader in global logistics.”

Global Impact of the Gemini Cooperation

The Gemini Corporation operates 29-liner services, supplemented by an extensive network of interregional connections. These routes span key trade corridors, including:

  • Asia–U.S. West Coast
  • Asia–U.S. East Coast
  • Asia–Middle East
  • Asia–Mediterranean
  • Asia–Northern Europe

By streamlining port calls and optimizing trade routes, this initiative enhances market connectivity, reduces transit times, and improves reliability for global shipping networks.

Commitment to Innovation and Customer-Centric Solutions

With the successful arrival of this first vessel and ongoing infrastructure advancements, APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas reaffirms its commitment to providing agile, efficient, and technology-driven solutions. Continued investments in automation and process improvements will further enhance its ability to support evolving global trade demands, ultimately benefiting customers and strengthening international supply chains.
