Between March 11th and 17th, four incidents of armed robbery against ships were reported to the ReCAAP ISC in Asia, reports Safety4sea.
Area Of Concern
One incident occurred at the port of Jakarta, Indonesia, while a general cargo ship was berthed.
Three incidents occurred in the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) of the Singapore Strait (SS) while ships were underway. No crew members were injured in any of the incidents.
The incidents involved the theft of scrap metal from barges, missing generator spare parts, and one incident where nothing was stolen.
Since January 2025, 26 incidents have been reported in the Singapore and Malacca Straits (SOMS). The ReCAAP ISC advises ships to increase vigilance when transiting SOMS. Littoral states are urged to increase patrols and enforcement in these areas.
Reassessing Threat Level
The Philippine government’s ongoing military operations in Zamboanga, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi have significantly weakened the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).
This has increased the possibility of the ASG’s dissolution through surrender, arrest, or neutralization.
As a result, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), in collaboration with relevant maritime security stakeholders, has downgraded the threat level for “Abduction of Crew for Ransom in the Sulu-Celebes Seas” from “MODERATE LOW” to “LOW.”
This “LOW” threat level indicates that there is no current information or monitored activity suggesting an imminent attack, and thus, incidents are not expected.
