Maritime officials halted ship traffic on the Bosphorus Strait. It is one of the busiest waterways in the world. On Wednesday a dry cargo ship experienced an engine breakdown while making its way north, reports Marine Insight.

Breakdown Near Major Bridge

The ship had a mechanical problem near the Kuzguncuk region while on its way between Romania and Turkey, the shipping officials said. The breakdown took place in front of the July 15 Martyrs Bridge, leading to a halt in both directions.

Fast Emergency Response

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure stated that a rescue tugboat and a pilot captain from the Coastal Safety General Directorate were sent quickly to support the stranded ship.

Successful Towing Operation

The vessel was towed to an assigned anchorage area successfully by rescue teams with the coordination of the Bosphorus Traffic Management Center.

Ship traffic in the south-to-north direction was resumed by authorities after the intervention. Officials ascertained that the incident involved no injuries or environmental risk.

Frequent Disruptions in a Critical Waterway

As a major shipping route for the world, the Bosphorus Strait is often temporarily closed because of ship failure and navigational difficulties.
