ORLEN Strengthens Poland’s Energy Security With LNG Expansion

53

ORLEN Group continues to reinforce Poland’s energy independence through its diversification strategy, leveraging its own LNG fleet and expanding long-term contracts with U.S. suppliers.

Key Highlights

  • Expansion of LNG Fleet:

    • ORLEN’s LNG fleet will increase to eight vessels by next year.

    • Two newly named LNG carriers, Józef Piłsudski and Ignacy Jan Paderewski, were built by Hyundai Heavy Industries.

    • These vessels, chartered for 10 years, carry 70,000 tonnes of LNG each – equivalent to Poland’s weekly household gas consumption.

  • Rising LNG Imports in Poland:

    • LNG accounted for nearly 50% of Poland’s total gas imports in 2024, with ORLEN importing 70.22 TWh.

    • Poland has received 347 LNG shipments at the Świnoujście terminal, primarily from the U.S. (167) and Qatar (154).

    • ORLEN also imports LNG via Lithuania’s Klaipėda terminal, receiving 11 shipments totaling 740,000 tonnes.

  • Strategic Infrastructure Expansion:

    • ORLEN has reserved the full 6.1 bcm regasification capacity of the new floating LNG terminal in the Bay of Gdańsk.

    • This will enable 58 additional LNG shipments annually, supporting Poland’s growing energy needs.

Advanced LNG Technology for Efficiency & Sustainability

  • Integrated power management systems and onboard reliquefaction technology help optimize fuel efficiency.

  • Dual-fuel engines ensure compliance with current and future environmental standards.

Ensuring Energy Security

  • Poland’s natural gas consumption is expected to reach 27 bcm by 2035.

  • ORLEN is investing in LNG infrastructure to ensure stable gas supply for Poland and neighboring markets, including Ukraine.

ORLEN President Ireneusz Fąfara emphasized:
“By leveraging our LNG fleet and expanding our partnerships, we guarantee energy stability for Poland while reinforcing security across the region.”
