HMM Takes Delivery Of First Methanol-Powered Containership, ‘HMM GREEN’

HMM has received ‘HMM GREEN’, its first 9,000 TEU methanol-powered containership, marking a significant step in its fleet expansion and decarbonization strategy.

Key Highlights

  • Fleet Expansion Plan:

    • HMM GREEN is the first of nine eco-friendly containerships ordered in February 2023.

    • Shipbuilders:

      • HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (7 vessels)

      • HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (2 vessels)

    • The remaining eight vessels will be delivered by next year.

  • Sustainability Features:

    • The vessel will bunker bio-methanol at the Port of Shanghai.

    • Bio-methanol benefits:

      • 65% carbon emission reduction

      • Eliminates sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions

      • Reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 80%

    • Equipped with advanced environmental technologies, ensuring compliance with:

      • EU ETS (Emissions Trading System)

      • FuelEU Maritime regulations

  • Strategic Deployment:

    • HMM GREEN will operate on the FIM (Far East Asia, India, and the Mediterranean Sea) service, supporting global trade while maintaining low emissions.

HMM’s Vision for Net-Zero

An HMM official stated:

 “This new vessel delivery is expected to accelerate HMM’s goal of achieving ‘Net-Zero by 2045. To enhance our competitiveness, we will continue to explore and adopt various fuel options.”
