Wärtsilä And MPA Partner To Launch Methanol And Ammonia Simulation Models For Maritime Training

90

Wärtsilä, a global leader in smart marine and energy technologies, has announced the introduction of the Methanol Power and Control (PAC) simulation model in partnership with the Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF) and Wavelink Maritime Institute. This initiative aims to equip maritime professionals with the skills needed to safely and efficiently operate methanol-powered vessels.

Wavelink Maritime Institute will be the first MPA-accredited training partner to implement this innovative model, which will be launched at Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2025. Additionally, Wärtsilä plans to introduce the Ammonia PAC simulation model in early 2026 to further enhance industry capabilities in handling ammonia-powered vessels.

A Renewed Partnership for Decarbonisation and Digitalisation

These initiatives are part of a renewed partnership between Wärtsilä and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to accelerate maritime decarbonisation and digitalisation. The collaboration will focus on:

  • Introducing next-generation alternative fuels

  • Optimising digital port operations

  • Developing future maritime talent

Advancing Research and Development in Singapore’s MarineTech Ecosystem

MPA and Wärtsilä will also collaborate with companies in Singapore’s MarineTech ecosystem to explore Research and Development (R&D) projects aimed at reducing the cost of adopting new fuel technologies. The projects will include:

  • Development of Methanol and Ammonia PAC simulation models

  • Plume modelling to enhance safety assessment

  • Improved handling of low- and zero-emission maritime fuels

The goal is to strengthen safety procedures for handling, storing, and operating alternative fuels while ensuring the industry’s readiness for new fuel technologies.

Building Future Maritime Skills and Training

To support the transition, Wärtsilä and MPA will work with industry stakeholders to identify emerging skills needed for methanol- and ammonia-powered engines. They will co-develop training curricula using advanced technologies and simulation models to enhance training effectiveness.

Fuel Training and Simulation Technical Conference 2025

In June 2025, Wärtsilä will host a Simulation User Conference focused on fuel training and simulation. The event will feature Wärtsilä experts discussing:

  • Latest advancements in simulation and training for renewable fuels

  • Competency development for alternative fuels

  • The future of maritime decarbonisation

This strategic collaboration between Wärtsilä and MPA represents a major step towards a safer, greener, and more efficient maritime industry, paving the way for the adoption of alternative fuels in global shipping.
