Avikus, a leader in autonomous navigation solutions and a subsidiary of HD Hyundai, has officially joined the newly established MIT Maritime Consortium, launched at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on March 18, 2025. The consortium gathers prominent maritime organizations to innovate and set international standards in autonomous navigation and maritime decarbonization. Avikus is contributing its groundbreaking HiNAS Control system, an AI-based autonomous navigation solution that significantly enhances maritime safety and efficiency, aligning with the consortium’s objectives to revolutionize vessel operations.

Collaborative Efforts to Shape Future Standards

CEO Dohyeong Lim of Avikus emphasized that collaboration with prestigious partners like MIT, ABS, and Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corp. enables the company to actively shape future standards actively for autonomous vessel operations. He stated, “This partnership enhances our ability to deliver substantial environmental and operational improvements to the shipping industry.”

MIT’s Role and Global Participation

Professor Themis Sapsis, Director of MIT’s Center for Ocean Engineering, highlighted that the consortium is crucial in developing new technologies and setting international standards for decarbonizing the maritime industry. Founding members, such as HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corp., and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), bring leadership in advancing maritime technology and sustainability. The consortium also includes Innovation Members like Dorian LPG, Foresight Group, and Navios Maritime Partners, underscoring its global reach and comprehensive expertise.

Aiming for a Sustainable Future in Maritime

Kwangpil Chang, Chief Technology Officer of HD KSOE, said, “Through this consortium, we aim to lead global technological standards and spearhead the development of next-generation eco-friendly ships.” The consortium’s alignment with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions further strengthens its position at the forefront of sustainable maritime practices. Avikus’s involvement demonstrates its commitment to advancing autonomous navigation technologies that contribute to a more efficient and environmentally friendly shipping industry.
