- MAN’s ME-GI dual-fuel engine nears 1,000 orders, leading in container shipping and tankers.
- MSC operates 125+ ME-GI engines, driving dual-fuel fleet expansion.
- High efficiency, low methane slip, and bio-LNG readiness boost adoption.
- Over 25 million kW installed, solidifying ME-GI’s role in green shipping.
MAN Energy Solutions has reported a strong start to the year for its MAN B&W ME-GI dual-fuel engine, reaffirming its position as the leading methane-fueled engine in the maritime sector. Since its introduction in 2014, the ME-GI engine has been widely adopted across multiple shipping segments, with orders approaching 1,000 units. The container shipping industry has shown the greatest demand, accounting for more than 400 engines, followed by gas and liquid tanker vessels with over 225 orders, and car & truck carriers exceeding 175 orders.
MSC’s Leadership in Dual-Fuel Fleet Expansion
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has played a pivotal role in driving ME-GI engine adoption, incorporating more than 125 units into its fleet, making it the largest owner of these engines. In addition, MSC has demonstrated strong support for MAN Energy Solutions’ Pump Vaporizer Unit (PVU), signing the most contracts for this product. According to Giuseppe Gargiulo, Head of Newbuildings at MSC, the ME-GI engine offers superior fuel efficiency, minimal methane slip, and optimized pilot-oil consumption—key attributes that support the company’s goal of developing a modern and energy-efficient fleet. With approximately 150 dual-fuel vessels on its order book, MSC continues to lead the industry in advancing sustainable shipping solutions.
The Role of LNG as a Transition Fuel
Bjarne Foldager, Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions, emphasized the ME-GI engine’s role in enabling the maritime sector’s shift toward cleaner energy. With the lowest methane slip among competing engines and a mature LNG supply chain accessible at major ports, the ME-GI engine provides shipowners with a reliable transition pathway toward decarbonization. As bio- and synthetic LNG become commercially viable, the ME-GI engine’s compatibility with these fuels will further accelerate the industry’s journey toward net-zero emissions.
Market Leadership and Future Prospects
Christian Ludwig, Head of Two-Stroke Sales and Promotion at MAN Energy Solutions, highlighted the ME-GI engine’s dominance in the dual-fuel market, with an installed power base exceeding 25 million kW. Since its launch and through its subsequent upgrade to the ME-GI Mk II, the engine has become the backbone of MAN Energy Solutions’ dual-fuel portfolio. Available in bore sizes ranging from 35 to 95, the ME-GI engine caters to diverse propulsion needs, including container ships, tankers, and even passenger ferries.
With its unmatched efficiency, technological maturity, and adaptability to future low-carbon fuels, the ME-GI engine continues to solidify its position as a key driver in the maritime industry’s push for sustainable and decarbonized shipping solutions.
