Swedish Club Launches Iceberg and Sea Ice Advisory in TELP System

  • The Swedish Club introduces a seasonal Iceberg Alert within its Trade Enabling Loss Prevention (TELP) system to enhance maritime safety by providing real-time ice hazard advisories.
  • The geo-fenced Iceberg Alert system identifies high-risk ice zones using data from two established ice advisory services to help vessels navigate ice-prone areas safely.
  • TELP’s new Ice Advisory feature is automatically available to subscribers, reinforcing TELP’s broader risk management support, which also includes severe weather, bunker quality, and pilotage alerts.

The Swedish Club has launched an Iceberg Alert as part of its TELP loss prevention system, providing vessels with targeted advisories in regions prone to seasonal icebergs and sea ice hazards. This initiative reflects the Club’s commitment to maritime safety and proactive risk mitigation.

Enhancing Ice Navigation Safety with TELP’s Iceberg Alert

Navigating ice-covered waters presents unique challenges, especially with smaller ice formations like growlers, which are difficult to detect but can cause significant vessel damage. The Iceberg Alert employs geo-fencing, marking general ice-prone regions and highlighting a high-risk zone where ice hazards are most concentrated. Ships receive automated advisories upon entering these areas, helping captains make informed navigational decisions.

The system integrates data from two established ice warning services, offering real-time updates on iceberg positions and sea ice limits. This feature is particularly useful for vessels navigating critical trade routes like the St. Lawrence Gulf and River, where avoiding ice altogether is not feasible.

TELP’s Advanced Loss Prevention Capabilities

TELP is a state-of-the-art risk management platform, leveraging AIS monitoring and historical claims expertise to provide vessels with real-time voyage risk insights. In addition to ice-related risks, TELP alerts shipowners to severe weather conditions, bunker issues, and pilotage challenges.

Martti Simojoki, Loss Prevention Manager at The Swedish Club, emphasized that the goal is to enhance safety and operational efficiency by ensuring vessels receive critical information at the right time. The Ice Advisory feature is being automatically deployed to all TELP subscribers, ensuring seamless access to this latest enhancement.
