CMA CGM Group, a global leader in integrated logistics and transport, has announced a strategic five-year partnership with generative AI pioneer Mistral AI. Backed by a €100 million investment, the alliance aims to deploy artificial intelligence across the Group’s core domains—shipping, logistics, and media—marking a pivotal development in CMA CGM’s innovation roadmap.

World-Class AI Talent Embedded in Marseille and CMA Media

Under the partnership, Mistral AI will assign a team of international AI experts to work on-site at CMA CGM’s headquarters in Marseille, as well as at Grand Central—the base of CMA Media. These specialists will collaborate directly with CMA CGM teams to roll out AI-driven tools that optimize shipping operations and create new forms of media innovation.

Mistral AI Factory and AI Media Lab: Powering Innovation

To spearhead transformation, two dedicated AI initiatives will be launched:

  • Mistral AI Factory, located at the Marseille HQ, will focus on enhancing operational efficiency and customer experience in shipping and logistics. Projects include automated claims processing, intelligent e-commerce tools, and smart document management.

  • AI Media Lab, based at Grand Central, will bring together AI experts, journalists, and media professionals to develop advanced media tools such as intelligent content management and innovative fact-checking systems.

Both initiatives are designed to make AI an integral part of daily operations and support CMA CGM’s broader digital strategy.

Empowering TANGRAM and Employee Training

The partnership will also support TANGRAM, CMA CGM’s excellence center for innovation and learning, by enhancing AI-focused training. This initiative aims to equip thousands of employees with the knowledge and tools to harness AI effectively across their roles.

Leadership Commentary

Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group, said:
“This partnership with Mistral AI marks a decisive step in the transformation of CMA CGM through artificial intelligence. Together, we will develop tailored solutions to reinvent our businesses, from maritime transport to logistics and media, with tangible benefits for our customers and our employees. With Mistral AI, we are choosing a French technology leader that combines excellence, digital sovereignty, and a strong sense of responsibility to build an artificial intelligence that serves both our performance and our values.”

Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, said:
“CMA CGM’s commitment to transforming all its activities through generative AI underscores both the Group’s ambition and strategic vision. Our partnership is intended to serve as a model for how AI can be structurally embedded within organizations to enhance Europe’s competitive edge. We are honored by the trust Rodolphe Saadé has placed in our company, our models, and our ability to support this transformation.”

Advancing AI Sovereignty and Industrial Innovation

The collaboration, fully rooted in France, highlights CMA CGM’s early investment in Mistral AI following the startup’s initial funding round in June 2023. It represents a commitment to building French-led AI solutions focused on source integrity and responsible deployment. This partnership seeks to position France as a front-runner in industrial AI development.

Accelerating AI-Driven Transformation at CMA CGM

Aligned with CMA CGM’s strategic AI roadmap, the Group has earmarked €500 million for AI initiatives, including partnerships with Google and Perplexity, as well as investments in PoolSide and Dataiku. The creation of Kyutai, a nonprofit AI research lab co-founded by Rodolphe Saadé, further reinforces the Group’s vision of responsible and forward-thinking AI leadership.

Through a focus on three core pillars—equipping employees with AI tools, delivering an AI-enhanced customer experience, and transforming operational processes—CMA CGM is positioning artificial intelligence as a central force in its digital transformation. Via TANGRAM, up to 3,000 employees will receive annual training in cutting-edge AI technologies.
