Northern Offshore Services Delivers World’s First 100% Biomethanol-Powered Crew Transfer Vessel

54

M/V Transporter, the world’s first crew transfer vessel (CTV) powered exclusively by biomethanol, has been officially delivered by Northern Offshore Services (N-O-S). The vessel marks a major step toward decarbonising offshore operations and advancing maritime sustainability.

A Pioneering Collaboration with Vestas

The initiative is part of a collaboration with Vestas, who will charter the vessel to explore the practical benefits of reducing carbon emissions in offshore service operations. The partnership highlights a shared commitment to testing low-emission alternatives to marine gas oil (MGO) in wind industry logistics.

About the M/V Transporter

Originally an A-Class vessel, M/V Transporter has been converted to a T-class, featuring a modernised hull for better performance. Key specifications include:

  • Length overall: 25.35 metres

  • Beam: 7.6 metres

  • Hull material: Aluminium

  • Passenger capacity: 24 seats

  • Forward deck area: 70 m²

  • Aft deck area: 30 m²

  • Fender system: N-O-S patented high-performance fender

Specially designed for fast and reliable technician and light cargo transfers, the catamaran offers both efficiency and comfort.

Powered by Clean Biomethanol

The vessel operates solely on biomethanol, a renewable fuel derived from sustainable biomass. Unlike fossil-based fuels, biomethanol helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, making it a promising alternative in the maritime energy transition.

Due to high global demand, fuel supply has been secured in advance through Northern Energy & Supply (N-E-S).

Setting a New Standard

With M/V Transporter, N-O-S and Vestas are pioneering a new chapter in sustainable offshore transport, demonstrating how innovation, collaboration, and commitment can shape a cleaner maritime future.
